Men's Health Week

June is Men’s Health Month, it’s a time to raise awareness for men’s health and preventable disease. From wearing blue this Friday before Father’s Day to talking with your friends, father, son, uncle, cousin about men’s health issues and wellness, there are plenty of ways to raise awareness for Men’s Health Month. While Men’s Health is a widely covered topic, we wanted to take this time to share Men’s Health Week (Sexual Wellness) Tips from SYLK.

1. Sleep

It’s no mystery that getting sufficient, quality sleep has loads of health benefits from reducing stress and inflammation to weight loss and improved brain function. Sleep is also necessary for optimal sexual health. Inconsistent or lack of sleep can lower testosterone levels, which can contribute to sexual dysfunction (source).

2. Move

Sedentary life is linked to numerous issues including diabetes, heart disease, and  decrease skeletal muscle mass (source). Exercising with cardio and strength training 3-4 times per week boosts energy and gets the blood flowing, lowers risk of certain diseases, increases testosterone levels, improves endurance.

3. Eat

Eating a well-balanced diet with high-octane foods such as berries and fresh fruits and veggies can boost energy and testosterone. Whole grains, nuts, and healthy fats such as olive oil can also aid in jumping testosterone levels (source).

4. Kegels

Kegels are not just for women! Men’s sexual health can also benefit from kegel exercises by toning the pubococcygeus (PC) muscles and in turn, training and strengthening your pelvic floor muscles. If you have never done kegels before, you can start next time you use the restroom by interrupting your urine stream to become familiar with your pelvic floor muscles. After that, you can contract and hold for 10 seconds and release. Do as many reps as you can daily to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles (source).

5. See Your Doctor

Visiting your doctor for an annual wellness visit is key for overall health especially if you have a family history of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. Regardless, making the choice to see your healthcare professional on a regular basis is necessary for optimal health maintenance.
