A projected (and staggering) 32 million women suffer from dyspareunia, a condition defined by the Mayo Clinic as the persistent or recurrent genital pain that occurs just before, during or after intercourse.  Many women can experience this at some point in their lives whether it is pain associated only with sexual penetration, pain with any penetration (including tampons), pain with thrusting, burning or aching during intercourse, or throbbing pain that lasts for hours after intercourse. Causes of dyspareunia range from physical causes such as vaginal dryness to emotional causes such as stress/anxiety.

According to a recent New York Times article, “Prices Keep Rising for Drugs Treating Painful Sex in Women” by Katie Thomas, while as many as 32 million women experience dyspareunia, only 2.3 million (or about 7%) actually receive treatment. Doctor prescribed treatments include estridol, which supplements estrogen in the body to reduce symptoms of menopause including vaginal dryness, hot flashes, etc.

Estridol and its 38 variations have been used as a treatment for many years and continue to be prescribed to patients as an effective treatment for their symptoms. However, Ms. Thomas explains in her article that the cost of these important medications has been on the rise for years, often doubling in price for some medications over the past five years. Patients are infuriated with the rising costs, however, these frustrations are often silenced because of the subject at hand – women’s sexual health.

In addition to the rising costs in these prescription treatments, the potential side effects are reason alone to initially seek an alternative treatment.  “In one study, women who took estrogens (such as estradiol) by mouth with progestin had a higher risk of heart attacks, stroke, blood clots, breast cancer, and dementia. Women who use topical estradiol alone or with progestin may also have a higher risk of developing these conditions. Using topical estradiol may increase your risk of developing ovarian cancer and gallbladder disease.” https://www.everydayhealth.com/drugs/estradiol

It is in this gap, especially with the continually rising cost of drugs, where women are seeking alternative less expensive solutions for their dyspareunia (painful sex). When it comes to vaginal dryness whether it is due to menopause, hormone changes, stress/anxiety, or other medications, many women are choosing a more cost-effective solution like SYLK, an FDA 510(k) Cleared water-based moisturizing lubricant, for added ease and comfort in their intimate lives. While the over-the-counter lubricant is not a treatment for low estrogen in women, SYLK personal moisturizing lubricant is intended for added ease and comfort in sexual activity and to gently supplement the body’s natural lubrication. “This is a great lubricator and has helped with my dyspareunia.” – PS 34, SYLK Customer Testimonial June 1, 2018

SYLK is not made with any parabens, hormones, harsh chemicals or added fragrance or flavors and is pH Balanced to a woman’s vagina.

Dr. Michael Krychman, SYLK’s Chief Medical Advisor comments, “It is very evident that minimally absorbed local vaginal estrogen products for the treatment of moderate to severe dyspareunia, a symptom of VVA due to menopause, are often very expensive and out of financial reach for many women especially those in significant need of the products. An over-the-counter non-hormonal, vaginal lubricant and moisturizer such as SYLK, often offer a far less expensive and safe alternative and in many clinical situations, remain the mainstay of treatment choices to painful intercourse.”

With the rising costs of prescription medications and their potential deadly side effects, many dyspareunia sufferers are seeking alternative solutions. SYLK Moisturizing Lubricant is known to provide gentle lubrication at fraction of the cost, without any hormones. “I am a breast cancer survivor and ever since having cancer 20 years ago, I have experienced slight to substantial vaginal dryness. I have never liked using traditional lubricants during intimacy for a number of reasons. First and foremost, I never liked the concept of putting artificial products and chemicals into my body. It just seems counterintuitive and dangerous. When I have used the traditional products, I have experienced pain, burning and oftentimes UTI infections soon after. With Sylk my partner and I have a lubrication product that meets all of our wants and needs with “no pain nor irritation” for the very first time in my adult life. Thank for bringing this product to market. I truly believe Sylk is the lubrication solution that women everywhere have been looking for.” – Ximena, SYLK Customer Testimonial March 7, 2017
