It’s a common thought by women that when menopause occurs, the body’s hormones just stop being produced and you have to begin a hormone replacement therapy program. If you choose to do this, you will hopefully opt for a healthier system of bio-identical hormones.

It is little known is that there is a backup system in place where the adrenal glands and our body fat provide a “back-up” plan of continuing hormone production after menopause begins. However, the extreme personal and environmental stresses that most of us live with counteract the back-up system, so that in any cases, it does not work to capacity. However, our bodies do, at some level, produce estrogen from the ovaries as well as a male estrogen-like hormone called androgen The adrenal glands, not the ovaries are the primary source of androgens. Even women in their 80’ produce some androgens which play an important roll in sexuality and health in general. They serve other purposes, such as muscle strength, vaginal elasticity and sex drive.

Androgens are converted to estrogen in women’s body fat, as the ovaries are no longer a primary source of these important hormones. The amount of estrogen converted by body fat is dependant on the amount of body fat present. In other words, thinner women have a harder time with menopause than heavier women with more body fat.

Chances are that if you are “stressed out”, you’re not even eating well to begin with, because the body uses increasing amounts of nutrients as stress rises. Some signs of adrenal insufficiency include chronic low blood pressure, fatigue, low stamina, sensitivity to cold and addiction to either sweet or salty foods. Many women entering menopause are in a state of adrenal “burnout”or hyperfunctioning . Hyperfunctioning of the adrenals can result in many of the symptoms of menopause including high blood pressure, dizziness, headaches and hot flashes, facial and body hair growth and other masculine tendencies, and even more severe conditions like allergies, low blood sugar and diabetes.

At some point, the adrenals are no longer functioning effectively and no longer producing beneficial androgens, which can relieve many menopausal discomforts. It is now that the daily diet should be seriously analyzed and positive, supportive changes made. Adequate protein and a number of vitamins, minerals and herbs can support and enhance adrenal function at this time. Some of the most important of these nutrients are the minerals Magnesium, Calcium, Iron, Potassium, Sodium and Copper. Due to the depletion of androgens, some of the very best and unadulterated food sources of naturally balanced minerals to support the adrenals come from sea vegetables, such as hijiki. One half cup of cooked hijiki is higher in Iron than two eggs and contains the same amount of Calcium as one-half cup of milk. Nori, a nutty tasting seaweed contains almost 30 percent protein. It comes in sheets and can be toasted, crumbled, then sprinkled on any food you re eating. Other green sea vegetables that are potently nutritional are spirulina, kelp, arame, wakame, and sea palms contain sodium alginate that pulls heavy toxic minerals from the body’s systems These may be unusual foods to many, but they are packed with nutrition and good taste. They can readily be found in any good health food market or Japanese food store. There are more familiar foods that you can choose including richly colored vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, kale, spinach, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and fruits such as bananas, strawberries, blueberries and cantaloupe. Legumes such as lentils are rich in Iron, soy products like tofu and tempeh are rich in Copper and eggs and meat are good sources of Manganese and Zinc. Locally grown fruits and vegetables are most often more nutrient packed.

The B-complex vitamins, known as the anti-stress vitamins are crucial during stress. Vitamin C, Zinc and manganese are also important for healthy adrenal glands. Some Vitamin C rich foods are citrus fruits, cantaloupe, green peppers and broccoli. Both Manganese and Zinc are involved in numerous enzyme systems that are necessary for the absorption of Vitamin C. Good sources of manganese include leafy greens, seaweeds, whole grains, cereals, nuts and seeds. Good sources of zinc include lean red meats, eggs, brewer’s yeast, seafood, pumpkin seeds and whole grains. Some herbs may also reduce stress, alleviating stress on the adrenals. These include hops, passion flower, skullcap and Chinese or American ginseng.

In addition to nutritional improvements, there are a number of lifestyle changes that can help the adrenal glands recover from exhaustion and help us cope more effectively with stress:

Simplify your life. Cut back on social activities and obligations that create deadlines and stress and make you tired.

Take time everyday for relaxation, recreation and exercise.

Learn to take control of your life and time.

Break the worry habit. Don’t waste energy that can be used in the healing process.

Learn to share your feelings, both negative and positive. Join a support group so you have people to share feelings and ideas with.

Find something to hit – punch a pillow or hit a tennis ball to release your pent up emotions.

Develop good sleeping habits. Get adequate rest.

Support your adrenal glands nutritionally and emotionally in all these ways to ease the discomforts of menopause naturally.

Noted Sexologist, Dr. Yvonne K. Fulbright always has some interesting comments that are related to sex. Here are a few of her recent observations:

Who’s Fussiest?
When it comes to finding love, a survey from Parship found that in a comparison of 14 countries, Irish women are the choosiest in Europe. British men are the least fussy about their partner of choice. French men put the greatest value on looks, while British men were into brains over beauty. (SYLK comment: Wonder where US women and men stand on this subject. We’ll search for the answers and report them.)

Sexual Jokes No Laughing Matter in Work Place
A study in the Journal of Applied Psychology examining the effects of sexual jokes, innuendo, flirtation and talks about sexuality issues at work found that neither gender gets anything positive out of such. While 25% report that such sexual behavior in the workplace is fun and flattering, these people also tended to feel less valued at work and report depressive symptoms compared to those who experienced little or no sexual behavior at the office. Participants were employed in the manufacturing, social service and university sectors.

High-Risk Partners Increase Risk of Acquiring STD
Research has confirmed that those who choose high-risk partners are likelier to have an STD even when one’s condom-use patterns are taken into account. A study published in Sexually Transmitted diseases found that of the 412 15 to 24-year-old participants, half of those with partners categorized as high-risk were diagnosed with an STD. Researchers are encouraging healthcare providers to ask patients more about their partner’s high-risk history during STD screening in potentially catching more patients who need to be tested for infection(s) and educated about safer sex.

Q: I am interested in your thoughts on how cybersex can be a healthy cmponent of someone’s sex life, as well as the pitfalls/dangers (emotionally) of cybersex.

A: Wise to be thinking since there are a lot of factors to consider in getting (more) sexually active via cybersex.
Some plusses to cybersex are that…

You can take on a whole new identity, which can be sexally empowering.

You can live out fantasies (and not necessarily in human form) that you could or would never do in real life.

You can “pick” up your real life lover in an effort to keep things hot and monogamous.

You can learn a lot of new sex tricks from online communities that support online group sex.

Some negatives about cybersex are that….

You can become a recluse from real life, which does nothing for singles wanting sexual intimacy.

You can hurt your partner’s feelings or wreck your relationship, especially if your partner sees cybersex with others as a form of cheating.

You could lose your sense of self in always living a fantasy; and

You could develop feelings for people that won’t be sustainable in real life and end up getting hurt yourself.

I came across a fascinating article the other day that contained a staggering statistic: 66% of women experience painful intercourse.

[Note: You can click here to read the full article by Katharine O'Connell, MD on Glamour.com]

Here’s an interesting excerpt from that article:

Simply not being lubricated enough is the number-one reason for pain during sex. There are two parts of our body’s response to foreplay. The first is engorgement, a rushing of blood to the vagina that expands the vaginal walls - our version of an erection. The second is lubricatioon, a release of moisture from the glands that ring the vaginal opening. Both actions signal your readiness for sex, so starting before they take place cqn hurt. One patient tol me, “A little friction feels good, but I think there’s too much friction happening.” The quick fix? A lubricant.

In addition to a lack of proper lubrication, other potential reasons for dryness include Vulvodynia, a yeast infection, cervix bumping, an Ovarian Cyst, Endometriosis and Pelvic Congestion. A doctor should be consulted in these cases, although a very few lubricants, noteably SYLK Natural Personal Lubricant, can be a valuable addition to your doctor’s recommendations.

As far as vaginal dryness goes, it is important to choose a water-based, all natural lubricant like SYLK for the healthiest and best results. You can thank us after you try it!

A new book by best-selling author Maggie Scarf suggests that couples - and their sex lives - improve with age.

In an interview with USA Today, Scarf talks about the research she did with older couples and their sex lives. “As they age, women are slower to lubricate and men are slower to have an erection. It has nothing to do with the fact that the other person is less sexy or likes you less. This calls for a lot more foreplay — hugging, kissing, stroking and being sensitive to the other person’s needs. Plus, using a lubricant is helpful when having sex.”

And there you have it.
